Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.
he Chartering Sisters of Beta Alpha Chapter chose Diabetes Awareness as our Colony Philanthropy because they each had an immediate family member who was affected by this deadly and debilitating disease. They decided that with their combined efforts they could further educate themselves as well as the community on Diabetes and its affects. Since the Fall of 2002, the sisters of Beta Alpha Chapter have been active participants in the Annual Juvenile Diabetes Walk, NYC Diabetes Walk, and have even started their own community outreach program; the "Ribbons of Hope Campaign."
The Sisters of Beta Alpha Chapter are hopeful that a cure for Diabetes is soon to come.
